Shen Yan, the most notorious "prodigal son" in the capital, wastes his days drinking in brothels and splurging gold—yet no one knows he’s the hidden son of the National Protector General, hiding his sharp sword to gather evidence of a powerful minister’s treason. Lin Wan, a merchant’s daughter, storms in to collect her father’s debt, ready to kidnap the playboy for payment, only to catch him holding a bloodstained sword and reading secret letters at midnight. From sabotaging each other to fighting side by side, she sees through his "prodigal" facade to his schemes, and he learns from her that "protection" isn’t shouldering everything alone, but sharing a ordinary life with a loved one. When the minister sets a trap to kill him, and the "prodigal son’s" true identity is exposed to the emperor, can he turn the tide to bring down the villain, and keep his promise to her: "I’d rather be your husband than a hero"?
