When Shen Yanchu became the new Emperor of Dajing, he was nothing but a puppet controlled by the Empress Dowager and powerful ministers—faking dizziness in court, pretending drunkenness at banquets, even having to marry Prime Minister Lin Henian's daughter as ordered. But everything changed when he wed Lin Wantang. The late-night secret letters were her stolen memorials from the prime minister; the general 'encountered' in the garden was her connection; even the Empress Dowager's arsenic was replaced by licorice by her. Until one day, Wantang blushed and gave him an amulet embroidered with 'Yan'—he realized: this 'minister's daughter' was the little girl he saved in a mass grave a decade ago. Her childhood promise, 'I'll protect you when I grow up,' had been her secret for ten years. As the puppet emperor shows his claws and the minister's daughter drops her disguise, they turn the 'puppet show' into an 'emperor's legacy' using the ministers' schemes—and even the empire becomes a backdrop to their love.
