1988年的上海，女作家沈韶华与政治犯章能才在动荡年代相遇相爱。韶华不顾世俗眼光，用稿费资助能才逃亡，却因战乱与误会天各一方。当韶华在码头苦等三日未果，殊不知能才正被押往台湾的轮船上绝望回望。四十年后，白发苍苍的能才重返上海，在韶华出版的旧书里发现夹着当年未送出的船票。
