Miao girl Aqiao had learned herbal medicine from her grandfather for ten years. To buy pear paste candy for her grandfather's asthma, she dared to go down the mountain for the first time. Right at the mountain pass, she ran into Ah Huai, a fellow villager with a congenitally curled left leg, being chased and bitten by wild dogs—the "heavenly lone star" that Granny Wang claimed "would bring three years of bad luck if touched". Aqiao grabbed a branch to drive off the dogs, used hemostatic herbs to bandage his wounds, and even gave him her only three copper coins for steamed buns. But that night, Ah Huai stood at her courtyard gate holding a glazed lamp. The fairy dew in the lamp instantly eased her grandfather's asthma. Ah Huai wept and confessed: He was the Medical Immortal of the Hundred Herbs Palace in Heaven. Five hundred years ago, he didn't dare to save Aqiao when she was abducted by bandits—he watched her break her leg. Now banished to the mortal realm, he needed a wife "willing to forgive his cowardice" to return. Aqiao was the redemption he'd waited five hundred years for.
