Ah Lin, a boy who herds pigs in the mountains, stumbles upon an old man clutching his chest and trembling in the woods one day. The old man had come to the deep mountains to repent for a misdiagnosis that cost a life years ago, but he’d lost his life-saving pills. Ah Lin chewed up wild ginseng he’d picked and fed it to the old man, saving him from death. Before leaving, the old man gave Ah Lin a wooden box carved with herbs, saying, “Open it when you’re in trouble.” Three days later, Ah Lin’s mother suddenly fell gravely ill, and even the village doctor could do nothing. Just as the family despaired, the old man showed up, used silver needles to acupuncture her, and woke her up in half an incense stick’s time. Only then did Ah Lin learn the old man was the “Medicine Sage” from heaven, in charge of medical ethics, who’d come down to atone for his past sins—and Ah Lin’s kindness had just helped him pass his final tribulation.
