45-year-old courier Lin Jianguo receives a hospital call—his daughter Lin Xiaoman has attempted suicide due to depression. Grieving outside the ICU, he’s overwhelmed with regret: he missed all of Xiaoman’s parent-teacher meetings to save tuition, never listened to her worries, and even was delivering packages when her mom passed away. In a daze, he travels back to the summer of 1998, when he was 18 and Xiaoman hadn’t been born. To his shock, his choices now “sync” with future Xiaoman: helping a neighbor watch her kid makes Xiaoman write in her diary, “Someone seemed to pat my head today”; writing a letter to future Xiaoman makes a yellowed note appear under her pillow. When he finally learns “how to be a dad” at 18, Xiaoman wakes up in the ICU—with the teddy bear he bought before traveling beside her. Turns out, the deepest regret is healed by “learning to love again.”
