Chen Mo, a maintenance worker in the old Fuxing Courtyard, picks up Lin Xiaoman, a comatose girl in a silk nightdress, at dawn. The hospital diagnoses her with "unexplained somnolence". To find her family, Chen takes her back to the courtyard, only to face gossip from neighbors: "He's picked up a burden" "She must be a fraud". But Lin's occasional sober mentions of a "locked wooden box" reveal her secret: she's the daughter of a bankrupt conglomerate, drugged into somnolence for hiding key evidence left by her father, and killers are on her trail. Chen, a "rough-around-the-edges" guy, deals with neighborhood rumors while outsmarting the killers with his "simple ways", and slowly falls for her as he feeds her porridge. When the killers break into the courtyard, Chen stands in front of her bed with a wrench: "I can fix pipes, and I can protect you." And in Lin's sober eyes, wariness has long turned into unhidden dependence...
