In the 1990s steel mill dormitory area of Northeast China, rough-hewn worker Liu Qing is saving to pay off his late father's debts and plans to leave for the south after one last month. But Zhang Chuxuan, a southern girl in a light blue dress who sings Teresa Teng's songs, crashes into his life—dragging him to fix kids' desks, handing him hot milk tea at the night market, and even secretly replacing the IOUs in his toolbox with her own savings. When Liu Qing stands at the train station holding his ticket, Zhang Chuxuan's voice suddenly comes over the broadcast: "Master Liu, the desks aren't fixed yet, and I still haven't learned the Northeast dialect... Will you wait?" As snow falls, he remembers their first meeting: she squatted by a coal pile picking up exercise books, her nose red from the cold, but smiled and said, "The snow in the Northeast is gentler than the rain in the south." What he never told her was that the gentlest thing of all was the day she walked into his life.
