In 1955, at Hongxing State Farm in Northeast China, Yu Yuhe, a Shanghai educated youth, takes her sick sister's place as a "fake technician". On her first day, she breaks the thermometer in the seedling shed and is caught by Sun Xihang, a key farm worker.
