In the old waiting room of a Northeast Chinese town, Lao Zhou, who has guarded it for thirty years, is about to retire when news comes that the room is to be demolished. This "little world of烟火 (smoke and fire, meaning warmth and life)" holds too many stories: Aunt Wang, who secretly goes to the city for medical treatment and dare not tell her children; Xiaohui, who wants to elope with her boyfriend and is stopped by her mother; Old Chen, a retired teacher, who comes with an old photo album to find his missed first love. When the demolition notice is posted, people with their own worries suddenly unite——Aunt Wang's children finally understand her forbearance, Xiaohui decides to face the future with her boyfriend, and Old Chen finds the "unsent letter" from years ago. And Lao Zhou finally realizes that what he's guarded is never just a room, but the warmest "nostalgia coordinate" for the town's people.
