Yao Hui, a widowed merchant's wife, is determined to save her late husband's failing business—she counts ledgers on a stool, argues with hooligans over goods, and haggles over every tael of silver, earning the nickname "Money-Minded Madam" in town. Her cousin Chen Yunting, a nobleman from the capital, is sent to "reform" her "unladylike" ways. But instead of disapproving, he finds himself drawn to her: the way she fights for her shop, the focus in her eyes when counting coins, even the ink smudge on her cheek. Yao Hui sees him as a nuisance and avoids him. Chen Yunting, however, secretly helps her—paying off her debtors, guarding her goods at night, and even learning to keep accounts. When Yao Hui is falsely accused of embezzlement, Chen Yunting steps up to take the blame. It's then that Yao Hui realizes: the man who always "disturbs" her money-making is actually the exception she cares about most.
