Gu Zhao, a down-and-out descendant of a noble family, goes bankrupt and faces the auction of his family's ancestral hall. At his lowest point, he finds Xiao Man, a 5-year-old abandoned girl who insists he's her "dad" and moves into his shabby warehouse. She even uses money from collecting scraps to buy old bricks from the ancestral hall—"This is our family's root." Gu Zhao initially plans to send her to an orphanage, but when Xiao Man holds up a dirty candy and says, "Dad's osmanthus cake is sweeter than the store's," he remembers his grandfather's last words: "Family tradition isn't a sign; it's someone willing to hold on." From then on, the pair teams up: Gu Zhao revives the lost osmanthus cake craft, Xiao Man acts as a "little shopkeeper" to attract customers. They finally redeem the ancestral hall and turn the old craft into a viral brand. Turns out, he didn't pick up a daughter—she picked up his soul.
