Lin Zhao (Li Qige), a poor scholar who has studied hard for three years, heads to the capital for the imperial exam. On the way, he saves Su Wantang (Sun Qianxun), a merchant's daughter being forced into marriage by a powerful official. To repay his kindness, Wantang secretly supports Lin Zhao but is accused of "ruining ethics" by her clan and sentenced to death by drowning. Lin Zhao risks his life to rescue her, only to miss the exam registration—worse still, his spot has already been stolen by the official's protégé! Holding evidence of the examiner's collusion, can they expose the truth? Will their names truly appear on the gold list? How can this life-or-death love survive the storms of the world and fight for a happy ending?
