Wu Feixue, the star of a Jiangnan opera troupe, travels to the capital with a jade pendant from her past benefactor to save her gravely ill master, only to break into the secret chamber of Xu Xiao, the "Iron-Faced Minister" who rules the capital. Xu Xiao, being hunted by hidden guards for the late emperor's will, mistakes Wu Feixue for a spy when he sees the pendant—once a token he gave to a rescued opera girl years ago—and imprisons her. As they spend time together, Xu Xiao discovers Wu Feixue can sing the *Peony Pavilion* aria he's kept in his heart for two decades—the exact tune of that little girl. Wu Feixue also uncovers Xu Xiao's tenderness beneath his cold exterior: he is the boy who gave her osmanthus cakes back then. When hidden guards arrive, Xu Xiao takes an arrow for Wu Feixue, and they finally realize—the most precious fate was sealed at the opera stage years ago.
