Lin Zhao, a laid-back official in the Ministry of Rites, dreamed of a quiet life—spending days with his childhood sweetheart Su Wan, making tea and discussing poetry. But when the emperor suddenly dies without an heir, powerful minister Gu Tingchuan (Liu Linnuo) and Empress Dowager Jiang (Jin Wenjun) team up to put him on the throne—turning his "python robe" (for officials) into a "yellow robe" (for emperors) to use him as a puppet. Forced into palace intrigue, Lin Zhao must fend off Gu’s power grabs, guard against the Empress Dowager’s plots, and even protect Su Wan from assassination attempts tied to his new identity. His peaceful life becomes a nightmare of power struggles. All he can do is sigh bitterly: "From python robe to yellow robe—you’ve really ruined me!"
