In the Republic of China, warlord Gu Tingchen married Su Nianqing, a famous opera actress. The world saw him as a cold-hearted tyrant, but only Su knew—this marshal’s jealousy could blow the mansion roof off. She offered a male actor a cup of throat-soothing tea, he smashed a crate of Song Dynasty porcelain. She discussed opera troupe transformation with a chamber of commerce president, he posed as a rickshaw puller and waited outside all night. When Su, finally disheartened, decided to return to her troupe, Gu pressed her against the red door with red eyes: “Su Nianqing, if you dare step out, I’ll buy every vinegar workshop in Beiping and sing *Farewell My Concubine* to you every day—soaked in vinegar!”
