Fifty-year-old Zhou Guilan is Sanlitun's notorious "shrew"—she scolds grain-stealing kids, her ailing mother-in-law, and even debt collectors; vagrants steer clear of her. But in the famine, those she "scolded" somehow survived: the kid found her corn cake in his pocket, the mother-in-law had her clay paste in her bowl, and neighbors always found extra rice in their jars after she yelled at debt collectors. It wasn't until she fainted from hunger saving an orphan that villagers uncovered her secret—her husband died protecting the village years ago, and she'd been using her sharp tongue as armor to keep his promise. Every harsh word in the famine? It was just her tenderness, wrapped in thorns, keeping the village alive.
