Li Changsheng, a barefoot doctor in the village, possesses exceptional medical skills yet refuses to leave his shabby clinic for the big city. Su Xiao, a female doctor from Beijing, tracks him down to treat her grandmother’s chronic illness. Initially, she calls him a “charlatan”—until she witnesses him saving Old Zhang, who suffered a heart attack, with just three needles. She then uncovers his past: he gave up a spot at medical school to save a drowning child, and it was his family’s secret ointment that stabilized her grandmother’s condition a decade ago. When Su Xiao tries to help him promote his skills, Li Changsheng pulls out a faded photo: “I owed this village a life back then; I have to repay it with my whole life.” Their collision on the “path of medicine” hides the warmest rural affection and unspoken romance.
