A famine ravages a small village in northern Henan. Zhou Dazhu, a farmer, watches his three-year-old daughter gnawing on wall skin from hunger and his wife coughing up blood on the sickbed—his last half-bag of cornmeal was just seized by a local gentry under the pretense of "borrowing grain". Desperate, he suddenly binds to a "Survival Supply System": collecting a catty of dead wood exchanges for two taels of millet, carrying water for his father-in-law gets a can of condensed milk. But the system's tasks grow increasingly dangerous: he has to sneak into the county town at night to transport relief grain, or trade his family's life-saving food for the whole village's survival... Torn between his family's life and his conscience, Zhou Dazhu clutches the system's "choice interface", his nails digging into his palm: in this famine that devours people alive, can he really protect his loved ones with the system?
