In the Republic of China, Su Yanqiu, a famous opera actress known as the "Living Yu Ji" (Concubine Yu) for *Farewell My Concubine*, hides a youthful heartbreak with Gu Zhaonian, a young warlord marshal. At 17, she wove a grass ring for him by the roadside as a promise—only for Gu to marry a chamber of commerce heiress and call her a "heartless actress". Yanqiu survived a suicide attempt, turning cold like the "Dead Yu Ji" from the opera. Three years later, Gu traps her by booking 100 performances. She provokes him to expose his cruelty, but finds unsent letters: he married to save her family, took a knife for her, and has tuberculosis. When Gu shows the faded grass ring while coughing blood, Yanqiu realizes their "so close yet so far" was his life-long protection. As autumn wind blows her sleeves, she’ll sing an "unfinished Yu Ji" for the man who hid secrets for three years.
