Su Wanyan, a cultural relic restorer, accidentally receives wild goose-shaped bronze ornaments from a northwest town. The inscriptions match the notes of her boyfriend Gu Lindong, who has been missing for three years. She tracks him down to the town, only to find him "engaged" to a local female teacher and cold towards her. It's not until she discovers Gu's cancer diagnosis in the drawer and his diary filled with "I'm afraid of dragging you down" that she realizes his deliberate alienation and indifference are actually heart-wrenching love. She stays with him for the last three months of his life, watching the wild geese fly south in the northwest — eventually, following the wild geese, one in the clouds, one on earth, apart but never separated.
