Shen Zhixia, mistress of the ancient Jingyuan Hou Mansion, was a well-educated woman from a humble background. After marrying into the mansion, she faced framing from concubines and coldness from her mother-in-law due to her “low birth”—when a concubine accused her of stealing a “Wang Xizhi calligraphy scroll”, she cited *Shuduan* (a classic on calligraphy) to expose the forgery on the spot; when her mother-in-law tried to sell farmland to solve a crisis, she used *Qimin Yaoshu* (a farming encyclopedia) to prove the next year’s bumper harvest and saved the family property; even when the mansion was falsely accused of “colluding with enemies”, she relied on her familiarity with *The Laws of Da Wei* to find evidence and clear their name. The so-called “ruling with fists” is actually her using knowledge as a weapon to silence malicious schemers, eventually becoming the respected “wise mistress” of the Hou Mansion!
