Su Wan, a palace maid who has served in the Forbidden City for five years, secretly falls in love with Gu Zhao, the cold and taciturn commander of the imperial guards. She saved three hundred love letters written over nights, always slipping them into his sleeve during his patrols, but never dared to look him in the eye—until the night before Gu Zhao was sent to the border, Su Wan ran to Shenwu Gate with a box of osmanthus cakes, only to see him kneeling before the Empress Dowager, asking to marry the princess. When Gu Zhao returned triumphantly three years later, Su Wan was already gone from the red walls. Only the old嬷嬷 in the imperial kitchen said that winter, a maid jumped into the moat holding half a box of unopened letters.
