On the 88th loop, she discovers a soul-eating "Returning Shade" lurks outside the wall, and she is the "living bait" to lure it away. But when she sees the bloodshot eyes and suppressed pain in Gu Zhao's eyes, she realizes that the one suffering most in this loop isn't her being hanged—it's him, who has to repeat the agony of losing her 88 times, knowing full well what's coming.
