Lin Xiaoman, a fine arts graduate, is forced to take over her grandfather's paper effigy shop on his deathbed, with a warning: "The last paper effigy maker must guard what shouldn't be forgotten." Just as she plans to sell it, the Republic-era student effigy she made at midnight suddenly moves—begging her to stop the demolition of the old ancestral hall. Then, Zhou Mingyuan, the "rascal" who vanished for ten years, returns to claim a "debt": her grandfather owed him an effigy to find his missing sister. When Lin is forced to pick up the bamboo strips, she uncovers the shop's secret: every effigy holds an unfulfilled wish, and her "guarding" is actually "repaying" for her grandfather. Even more terrifying—her effigies start "choosing" their owners: the elderly neighbor wants to find her late grandson, a white-collar worker seeks her lost childhood, and Zhou's sister? She's hiding in the shop's attic! The last page of her grandfather's diary has a chilling line: "Xiaoman, you're not my granddaughter. You're the one I made?"
