Lin Xiaoman, an orphan from a poor mountain village, was raised by her grandma but forced by her greedy uncle and aunt to marry a village fool for bride price. In despair, grandma secretly gave her the retirement money saved for 20 years: "Run to the place with light." Xiaoman fled to the county town overnight with the warm money, hiding from her relatives and struggling in the unfamiliar city—inside the money was a note from grandma on an old handkerchief: "Don't be afraid, grandma's spirit is with you." This escape is grandma's sacrifice of her later-life security to give Xiaoman a chance to live for herself.
