Luca, an Italian exchange student in China, fakes being a top-tier Chinese speaker to win a scholarship. On his first day, Lin Xiao, a Chinese classmate, calls out his lie and forces him to be her free Chinese tutor. During their time together, Luca finds an old brooch in Lin Xiao’s dorm—one his sister left before she disappeared years ago. Lin Xiao, his sister’s former roommate, has secretly been searching for clues about her. This “phoney start” uncovers a decade-old mystery, turning their bickering into ambiguous romance.
