Lin Wan, an unfavored concubine’s daughter of the Hou Mansion, is forced to be the companion of the neglected Third Prince Chu Heng. They find solace in each other amid the palace’s coldness and fall in love secretly. But when Chu Heng has to marry a powerful minister’s daughter to fight for the throne, he cruelly drives Lin Wan out, saying, “I never wanted a future with you.” Ten years later, as the all-powerful Prime Minister, Chu Heng discovers during a rebellion that Lin Wan stole enemy battle plans for him—she was imprisoned for three years, lost her legs, and kept the peach-branch handkerchief he gave her, a silent “I waited for you.” Holding the bloodied Lin Wan, he realizes the deepest agony isn’t not loving, but loving someone so much that fate turns them into each other’s blades.
