Ah Zhao, a little beggar in the broken temple of Chang'an City, is harassed by Wang, the restaurant owner, for stealing buns and even threatened to be sold to a brothel. At the critical moment, Xiao Heng, the cold-faced Crown Prince from the Golden Luan Palace, suddenly bursts in and grabs Wang by the neck: "How dare you touch my daughter?" It turns out that five years ago, Xiao Heng was ambushed and saved by Ah Zhao's mother, who died because of him, leaving only Ah Zhao. Xiao Heng didn't dare to take her back to the palace due to the Empress Dowager's opposition, so he could only take care of her secretly. Now, to protect Ah Zhao, he smashes the restaurant, retrieves her doll, bargains with vendors for sugar-coated haws, and even argues with the Empress Dowager. But when the assassin from five years ago approaches, Xiao Heng discovers that the jade pendant left by Ah Zhao's mother holds the key to curing his chronic poison—the little beggar he's desperately protecting has long been his life.
