In the imperial palace of the Sheng Dynasty, Gu Zhao (played by Huang Youtian), the heir of the state-protecting general, is ordered to guard the ever-burning lamp symbolizing national fortune. He meets Su Qingyao (played by Ma Qiuyuan), a daughter of a wronged minister who hides her identity to clear her father’s name. They fall in love through the lamp, but get entangled in the concubines’ power struggle: the Empress uses the lamp’s “bad omen” rumor to suppress the Concubine, while the Concubine targets Qingyao as a “traitor’s remnant” to kill her.
