Lin Xiaoman waited for Gu Shen through eight summers—since he promised "I'll marry you next summer" when she was 18, she received a sycamore leaf from him every midsummer, but never saw him. Until the end of the eighth summer, she met him, battered, outside the ICU. Only then did she learn he'd secretly returned each year, but dared not face her due to chemotherapy side effects from his terminal illness; those sycamore leaves were picked by him, clinging to life with IV fluids, as he crawled through their old alleys. When Gu Shen took out the ring he'd hidden for eight years, only to collapse in her arms, she finally understood: his "summer slumber" was never absence—it was a goodbye he dared not speak, fought for with his life.
