In the old alley of a 1990s Northeast Chinese county, Li Tiedan, a grilled kidney vendor, guarding his smoky stall, finally waits for Zhou Xiaohong—the returned educated youth who fled years ago, the girl who once squatted by his grill, eating kidneys and saying “I’ll marry you”. But when they reunite, Xiaohong wears a gold bracelet from the factory director’s son and has her mother pressing for marriage behind her. Tiedan’s skewer still drips with oil, while the half-finished scarf hidden by the coal stove is already grayed by soot. When the demolition team sprays red paint on the stall’s wooden door, and Xiaohong finds the crumpled note Tiedan secretly gave her years ago, which reads “Wait for me to earn enough to marry you”, how can this couple, whose hearts were broken by the times, piece back their once fiery love in the aroma of grilled kidneys?
