Lin Xiaoman has loved top student Xu Xingyao from afar for three years, seeing him as an untouchable 'white moonlight' (an idealized person) and filling three diaries with his back, profile, and every little detail she’d observed. On graduation day, she takes the diaries to bury under the old wutong tree on campus—only to find Xu Xingyao crouching there, holding a neatly written diary with the exact same cover as hers. It turns out Xu has noticed her too since freshman year: the messy strands of her ponytail, the way she bites her pen when thinking, even the notebook she dropped on the stairs (he secretly picked it up and put it back).
