Lin Chuan is reborn as a poor boy in a famine-stricken era, hiding in a dilapidated temple to escape trouble. By chance, he saves Zhao, a female ghost being chased by a Taoist—rumored to be a “life-stealing ghost煞 (evil spirit)”. But to his surprise, Zhao uses her ghostly power to help him find food, fend off hooligans, and even takes a fatal talisman meant for him. As they grow closer, Lin Chuan discovers Zhao’s “evil reputation” is a frame-up by greedy gentry, and her true identity holds an unspoken deep love from their past life. When starving ghosts besiege the village, gentry steal grain, and the Taoist seeks revenge, Lin Chuan stops running—he will break the fate of “humans and ghosts being worlds apart” with Zhao, forging a sweet yet poignant love story of redemption in a world full of starvation and despair.
