Su Wan, reborn into a year of severe drought and famine, collapsed outside a broken temple from hunger—only to be given half a cold steamed bun by Gu Zhao, a young man leading a relief caravan. That was his last ration. In her past life, she died with regret; in this life, she discovers this man—who will later dominate the court—once remained unmarried for her. But surviving the famine is a struggle: Gu Zhao faces corrupt officials stealing grain, and Su Wan helps him uncover their schemes. The half bun becomes their "love promise"—he says, "When the grain arrives, I’ll steam you a whole basket of hot ones," and she smiles, "When you secure your power, I want to be the one sharing buns with you." Sweet romance intertwined with political intrigue, their love in the famine burns hotter than any in prosperity.
