Su Wan was picked up by Gu Yanzhi at 10 and called him "Uncle Jiu" for ten years—hiding her feelings for him all the while. On her 18th birthday, she held a mandarin duck handkerchief she'd embroidered all night to confess, only to find the Minister's daughter in a phoenix robe in Uncle Jiu's study. He said he'd marry her on the 8th of next month, then coldly threw the handkerchief on the ground: "Men and women should keep their distance. Don't come to me again—we'll never meet for the rest of our lives." Su Wan cried and ran back to the woodshed, burning all the notes filled with "Uncle Jiu". But three years later, at his funeral, she found that half-burned mandarin duck handkerchief under his pillow, along with a blood-stained prescription: "This gu has no cure. I won't live past this winter. I can't let her suffer with me."
