Li Erniu, a farmhand who starved to death in a famine, is reborn to the day his village is struck by disaster. Determined to rewrite his fate, he juggles growing sweet potatoes and running a small workshop to make ends meet, while burning the midnight oil to study for the imperial exam. At a market, he rescues Shen Zhixia—a poor but talented girl oppressed by her clan for being female, yet unyielding in her pursuit of knowledge. They become unlikely partners: counting coins and selling goods by day, tutoring each other under dim oil lamps by night. But greedy landlords covet his farmland, jealous villagers spread rumors, and examiners sneer at his lowly birth… Just as the aroma of his sweet potatoes fills the county, Li Erniu’s exam victory arrives—proving that the sweetest counterattack is building a golden future with you, hand in hand, from the mud.
