Lin Xiaoman, who sells wontons in the old alley, waits every night for a regular customer—Gu Zhao, a returning architect. He always orders shepherd's purse wontons, sits in the corner staring at her flour-stained fingertips while she kneads dough, never saying more than necessary. But when Xiaoman finally hands him a note with her address, Gu Zhao suddenly disappears. Three months later, she bumps into him pushing a chemotherapy cart in the hospital, only to learn that the man who promised to “accompany her through four seasons of alleyway fireworks” had long been given a “three-month survival period” by lung cancer. Their love began with a bowl of hot wontons, but now they have to bet on a countdown of “can we live until spring” in the ward. And the secret Gu Zhao hid behind his medical records is more heart-wrenching than “death”—he had already secretly bought the neighboring shop to open her a wonton store “where she never has to stay up late again.”
