Female thief Su Xiaotang stole a jade pendant engraved with the character "Shen," triggering an ancient binding curse—she and Shen Yu, commander of the Imperial Guards, became "life-and-death partners": they suffer excruciating abdominal pain if separated by more than ten steps! To break the curse, she's forced to join Shen Yu in investigating the genocide case where his family was falsely accused of treason. One is a slippery, money-hungry "little thief," the other a cold, unfeeling "Yama of the Imperial Guards." They bicker nonstop: Su Xiaotang steals clues for wine money (Shen Yu confiscates her purse), Shen Yu forces her to learn martial arts (she cuts his official uniform to rags). But when they uncover the mastermind is Prince Ning, who wields immense court power, Su Xiaotang takes an assassin's knife for Shen Yu. For the first time, Shen Yu panics—holding the bloodied her, he says, "Don't fear, I'm here." When the injustice is cleared, the curse fades. But Su Xiaotang cries, "I don't want to break it," and Shen Yu smiles, pulling her close: "Our bond was never a curse—it's that I've long wanted to spend my life with you."
