The younger concubine sister Liu Yan envies her elder sister Su Wanqing who is beautiful and talented. To snatch the 'phoenix man' (an ambitious man from a poor background seeking social climbing), she forces Wanqing to marry the seemingly sickly Shen Muchen originally betrothed to Wanqing. Wanqing has no choice but to marry into the Shen family expecting a short-lived husband, but finds Shen Muchen strong and healthy—he’s actually a hidden young marshal of the Republic of China tasked with investigating old cases secretly. When Liu Yan learns the truth, she’s rejected by the phoenix man and comes to the Shen family to cause trouble. With her young marshal husband’s protection, Wanqing resolves the crisis and gets involved in his mission. The two gradually develop feelings from resentment, uncovering a thrilling love story about identity and old grudges.
