Shen Yanqing, the powerful Lord Taifu who dominates the imperial court, has been married to Lin Wantang, a general's daughter, for three years—but he's always been cold to her, his mind consumed by political schemes, even forgetting her birthday. Until that day, Lin Wantang held the little kitten saved by Gu Zhao, a butcher, her eyes shining like burning stars: "Taifu, I want to live with him." Gu Zhao is a rough man wielding a cleaver in the market, yet he brews ginger tea when she catches a cold, defends her when noble ladies pick on her, and even risked his life to save her from a runaway carriage. Shen Yanqing panicked for the first time—he dug out the jade hairpin hidden in his chest (the token of love he'd never given her) only to see Lin Wantang squatting at Gu Zhao's meat stall, biting a sweet pancake and smiling until tears fell. As the lofty Taifu starts learning to make sweet soup, and the butcher inserts the silver hairpin he's saved half a year for into her hair, Lin Wantang finally realizes: what she's always wanted isn't the glory of the Taifu's mansion, but someone who cherishes her with all their heart.
