Su Wantang, the empress dowager who ran the harem for two decades, only saw her adoptive son Emperor Xiao Jingheng's true feelings as she breathed her last—he abolished the consort selection for her, took a beating for her, yet hid his love like starlight in his eyes because of the "mother-son" title. When she woke up again, she was sixteen, newly entered the Eastern Palace, and hadn't become Xiao Jingheng's adoptive mother yet! This time, she refused to be a "mother" bound by titles. She would take the boy's hand before anyone else and say: "Jingheng, I don't want to be your mother. I want to be your wife."
