Little maid Tao Yao has served Prince Murong Chen since childhood. When he's framed by a traitor and exiled to the border, she risks her life to catch up with the prison cart, determined to stay with him. On the road, she throws herself in front of an assassin's knife for him, trades her embroidery for food during famine, and climbs mountains to find herbs when he has a fever. Murong Chen goes from cold resistance to covering her with his cloak at night and saving the only water for her—their bond deepens in despair. But when the prince reclaims his position, the queen mother forces him to marry a general's daughter to consolidate power. Tao Yao hides her sadness and prepares to leave, only to be blocked by Murong Chen at the palace gate. Holding a phoenix coronet, he says: "The princess of Murong Chen can only be you, Tao Yao."
