Documentary director Lin Wan tracks down Gu Chengchuan, a singer who vanished three years ago, for her project *The Disappeared Midsummer Singer*—only to find he’s her high school sweetheart who suddenly left without a word. When they reunite, Gu is cold and distant, treating her like a stranger. But Lin stumbles upon his old medical records: he’d been diagnosed with sudden hearing loss back then, and left quietly to avoid holding her back from her dreams. Just as Lin confronts him with the records, Gu collapses from a relapse amid the August cicada chirps. Can this long-overdue truth free the two people trapped in that summer, and bring back the unsaid words, *I never really left*?
