In 1977, a negligent nurse at a machinery factory hospital in Jiangnan swapped Lu Zhao (played by Wang Daotie), the son of an engineer, with Ye Xiaotang (played by Mai Tong), the daughter of a rural private teacher. Twenty years later, the resumption of the college entrance exam triggers their fateful twist: Lu Zhao, raised as a "factory director's son," is forced to give up the exam to take his father's job, only to find a yellowed birth certificate in old items.
