Chen Mo, a lowly frontier soldier, scrapes by in turbulent times. One day, he finds a starving woman unconscious in a mass grave and saves her with his last cold steamed bun—only to discover she’s Li Zhao, the empress whose kingdom was overthrown by usurpers. Li Zhao hides her imperial jade pendant and poses as “A Zhao,” Chen Mo’s maid, while secretly rallying her old allies to restore her country. Chen Mo, initially just being nosy, is gradually drawn to her strength beneath the fragility. They shield each other from bandit ambushes and enemy spies, but when the usurper’s men track Li Zhao to Chen Mo’s camp, she has to reveal her true identity. Caught between her duty to reclaim the throne and his desire to protect “A Zhao,” this chaotic bond that started with a steamed bun is only just beginning to unravel.
