Li Shishi, the capital's most famous courtesan, spent ten years of her earnings from entertaining guests to fund the destitute scholar Zhao Jie's imperial exams—even pawning her mother's cherished jade pendant. Before leaving, Zhao held her and wept, "When I become the top scholar, I'll marry you with an eight-person sedan chair." Her choice was about to shatter the capital's gentle illusion.
