Sixteen-year-old Emperor Murong Yan of Beiyan is crushed by the powerful minister Zhou He—his newly drafted edict to take back power is torn up publicly, and even the palace gate guards are replaced by Zhou’s men. What’s more headache-inducing is the “empress dowager” in the palace: Shen Ruanruan, the three-and-a-half-year-old empress appointed by the late emperor, who spends her days chasing butterflies with a sugar figurine, has to be held during court meetings, and even chews on the imperial seal as a toy. But when Zhou He storms the palace with a fake military tally to usurp the throne, the soft little Ruanruan suddenly tugs his sleeve and says in a baby voice, “Brother, Uncle Zhou’s tally— the phoenix is missing a claw! Last time I saw the eunuch’s real tally, the phoenix has five claws～” This sentence exposes the traitor’s plot and makes Murong Yan realize: the little girl who only knows how to act cute is actually the key to saving the dynasty!
