Chen Afu, an old paper craftsman in a remote mountain village, has followed the rule “paper figures never enter living people’s homes” for 30 years. However, he breaks the rule to fulfill a dying old man’s plea—taking a “soul-sending paper figure” home. That night, red tears seep from the paper figure’s eyes. Soon after, tragic deaths occur one after another: victims have their throats stabbed with paper needles, and half-burned paper figures lie beside their bodies. Villagers accuse Afu of “inviting ghosts into the village” and even plan to burn his paper crafts shop. To prove his innocence, Afu traces the paper figure’s clues and discovers all the deceased are linked to a covered-up teenage girl’s death case 20 years ago—and the paper figure looks exactly like the girl who died tragically back then…
