Gu Zhao, a commander of the Northern Patrol Division, pretended to defect to the eunuch clique to save his childhood love Shen Zhixia, who was framed by villains. But Shen Zhixia believed his "betrayal" and married Gu Zhao's best friend—Lin Yan, a gentle scholar from the Hanlin Academy—in despair. Heartbroken, Gu Zhao faked his death and went into hiding. Three years later, Shen Zhixia found a secret letter revealing the truth, only to discover Gu Zhao had married Su Wantang, a merchant's daughter, and they lived in perfect harmony. When she knelt before Gu Zhao, sobbing and begging for a second chance, Gu Zhao coldly said: "I knelt all over the imperial street begging you to trust me. Now even if you kneel till dark, you can't get back my heart."
